Can I Use My Computer With A Projector?

Generally all Apple laptops made after 2002 come with a video port to connect another monitor or projector to the computer. As long as your computer has one of the video ports pictured on the bottom of this page, you can use it with a projector. Please let us know which computer you plan to use with the projector and we will make sure you get the appropriate adapter. Our projectors don't care what operating system your computer uses. The majority of current Windows laptops come with a VGA (video) port and will work with our projectors without additional adapters. If you don't have a compatible computer, you can rent one from Tekserve.

How Do Projectors Work? (Mirroring versus Extending)

Projectors plug into your computer's video port to replicate what is on your display (mirror) or act as an additional display (extend). Any computer (with one of the video ports below) will allow you to mirror what is displayed on your built-in monitor on the projector. This means that you can project a copy of whatever is displayed on your computer. However, the projector may have a different resolution than your built-in display. Our projectors have a resolution of 1024x768 pixels. You can see what your projection will look like by changing your display's resolution to 1024x768 in your system preferences. (Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of your screen, select system preferences, select displays, and choose 1024x768 from the list of resolutions.)

Apple computers with any type of DVI port (DVI, Mini-DVI, Micro-DVI) allow you to mirror or extend your desktop with the projector. Extending your desktop means that the projector acts as an additional display. This allows you to have your presentation notes on your laptop's built-in display, while showing your presentation slides on the projector. You can drag programs between your built-in display and the projector by moving the window. If you'd prefer to mirror what's on your built-in display on the projector, check the "Mirror Displays" box in system preferences. (Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of your screen, select system preferences, select displays, select the arrangement tab, and check the "Mirror Displays" box.) You can also activate mirroring by pressing the F7 key on most Apple portables.

How to Set-up A Projector

  1. Visit the presentation location to plan how you will set-up your laptop and the projector. The projector needs to be directly in front of the center of the projection screen, facing the screen squarely. The projection size calculation guidelines above will tell you approximately how far away from the screen you need to place the projector. The projector requires a regular power outlet and comes with a 6' power cord. (Hint: Check if you'll need an extension cable or power strip to plug everything in.) The laptop connects to the projector with a VGA cable that is also 6' long.
  2. Start with your computer and the projector turned off. Connect the VGA computer cable between your computer's video port and the projector's blue computer port. You may need an adapter if your computer doesn't have a VGA port (included free of charge upon request). Use the included power cord to plug in the projector to any power outlet.
  3. Turn on your computer. Our projectors have a lens cap or sliding door on the front. Take off the lens cap or slide the door open completely. Then press the power button on the projector to turn it on.
  4. If the image displayed isn't what you anticipated, you may need to adjust your system preferences. (Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of your screen, select system preferences, and then select displays.) You can adjust the resolution, color, and arrangement of your built-in display and the projector there. You can also press F7 on most Apple laptops to enable mirroring without accessing the system preferences.
  5. Use the projector's built-in feet to raise or lower the image to match your screen's height. Then use the zoom and focus rings to adjust the image size and clarity.
  6. After your presentation is complete, turn off the projector by pressing the power button BUT DON'T UNPLUG IT. Let the projector cool down for a few minutes before unplugging the power cable.
